Many of us are feeling the same pressure. That should be a common bond. So why are we fighting each other?
People feel squeezed. People feel exhausted. People feel less secure. People feel unheard. People feel more divided.
People feel something has changed, but they do not always know how to name it.
Those feelings are not limited to one party or ideology. People may explain the pressure differently. But underneath those explanations, many people are living with the same sense that life has become harder to hold together.
This conversation begins there.
Not with blame. Not with politics. Not with accusation.
With the feeling that something has changed.
And then with a harder question:
What changed in me?
What this is
A 90-minute author-led community conversation.
It helps people name shared pressure, recognize how fear and blame can divide us, look at what history can teach us about human behavior, and consider what better patterns we still have the ability to strengthen.
It is designed for people who may disagree about politics, causes, or solutions but who are tired of the fighting and willing to look one layer deeper.
It is not a lecture. It is not a political debate. It is not a Holocaust comparison program. It is not a book report.
The book provides the lens. The conversation creates the mirror.
How the conversation moves
Serfdom — What is happening to us?
People feel free on paper, but trapped in practice. Their money, time, attention, patience, trust, and sense of future can feel increasingly claimed before they get to choose. The conversation begins with the feeling.
Extraction — Why are we fighting each other?
Pressure can be used. Fear, anger, attention, blame, silence, and division can all be used. The central question is: Who benefits?
Echoes of History — How does history warn us?
History does not repeat as identical events. But human patterns can return: fear, blame, silence, cruelty, unstable truth, us and them, and ordinary people accepting things they once would have rejected.
Carry it forward — What do we do now?
We stop feeding harmful patterns. We take something back. We strengthen better patterns. We invite someone else into the conversation.
The point is not to label people with the past.
The point is to recognize patterns before they become history.Visual essay
The New American Serfdom
The conversation begins with ordinary life: working harder, carrying more debt, and finding that more of what we earn is committed before it reaches us. Ownership on paper does not always mean freedom in practice.
The carry-forward action
The event is the beginning.
- One pattern I want to stop feeding is…
- One thing I want to take back in myself is…
- One better pattern I want to strengthen is…
- One person I want to invite into this conversation is…
Movements do not begin because everyone agrees on everything. They begin when people recognize something together and decide to carry it forward.
The book
The conversation opens the door. The book helps people go deeper.
Echoes of History goes deeper into the patterns touched in the room—how they form, how people get used to them, and how history warns us while there is still time to choose differently.
